The volcanic ashes located at the foothills of the Sierra Mountains, located in Amador County, only added more character to the place. Add to it are the vibrant colors of foliage and flowers, as well as the rich soil that feeds the growing vineyards or grape farms in the region. Indeed some of the best wines are produced right here, in the country, particularly in Shenandoah Valley. Across the vast lands are also quaint and usually vintage cellars and wine rooms, some of which are generous enough to open their doors to the public. One of these is the Helwig Winery. The Makings of the Good Grapes Helwig Winery is one of the most awarded vineyards and wine rooms in the country, having won the following categories in 2011 and 2012: Sparkling Rose de Syrah, Rose de Shenandoah, Helwig Barbera, and Round Up White. The grapes are produced across four large vineyards found in Northern California, including the counties of Solano, El Dorado, and of, course, Amador. And through the years, they are able to produce, store, and sell wines through their intricate cave system. READ FULL STORY AND SEE PHOTO GALLERY...
